I felt like I had a positive experience with him and did not have the "car salesman" experience that people generally fear when going to dealerships. My combined experience with my internet salesperson (Evan Warren) and the Subaru Brattleboro dealership, on the other hand---was quite bad. And because of that I don't think I would recommend anyone else make a purchase through Brattleboro Subaru. Or at least I would advise them to be on their guard and be incredibly careful. My story is as follows: Evan reached out to me via email to ask if I would be interested in the last Forester "Sport" on the Brattleboro lot. I said no thank you after seeing the price he offered and told him I was looking for $2,000 less (i.e., the price I was being quoted at other dealerships and was considering looking at cars on Carmax). In response, Evan said that Brattleboro could accommodate that price. Based on that representation, I shut down the myriad other conversations I was having with other dealers (I had a spreadsheet of ~10 different dealers I was working with), gave a $1000 non-refundable deposit, and drove 2+ hours away from my home from Somerville, MA to Brattleboro, VT to purchase my vehicle. When I got there, the manager declined to honor Evan's deal and told me I would need to pay the additional $2,000. I was floored. After everything I did based on that representation, I can't describe the shock I felt in that moment. The manager first tried to tell me I needed to pay the extra money because "I was mistaken" and that Evan did not commit that price to me, but that Evan instead was just essentially making loose comments about what could or could not be true. This tactic actually infuriated me even more because it was essentially gaslighting. I had numerous conversations with Evan over the phone and via email and we both knew that we were discussing an actual sale price. I flat out told Evan I would not be working with him otherwise. Why else would I be working with a dealership that was 2 hours from my house? And why else would I submit a $1,000 deposit? Both Evan and I knew I would not have done those things if the price was any more than what he committed to. After that, the manager's next tactic was to say that, regardless, Evan was not authorized to drop the price of the car that much. Again, infuriating. Why would anyone work with a dealership if every conversation leading up to the point of sale could just be undermined in this way? And what a position to leave me in this far into the sales process. A truly lose/lose situation and one that left me feeling like I would never in a million years purchase a Subaru again. I will say the manager eventually attempted to soften the blow by meeting me halfway and asking for an additional $1,000 instead of an additional $2,000. I appreciated the effort---but of course you're left wondering: was this a massive ploy to begin with? Was I just another victim to the car dealership machine? It was really unfortunate because I felt so great about the purchase and with my experience with Ian before all of this started going down. I truly think the right way to handle the situation would have been to honor the commitment that Evan made me. My ultimate experience was incredibly harrowing and, as I mentioned, I don't think I could in good faith recommend this dealership to anyone else. One final comment though: Again, I would like to reiterate that I have no complaint about Ian. He was incredibly professional and helpful the entire time. The only positive thing about my experience. John Mclean is a Rock Star Salesman and most especially because he does not even know he is. John is absolutely brilliant without a shred of pretentiousness. He picked out the car I would drive away in the because he does not even know he is. John is absolutely brilliant without a shred of pretentiousness. He picked out the car I would drive away in the first time we met- it took me two weeks and several days of test driving numerous other cars before I caught on to what he saw the first day. John listened to my words- paid attention to my tones and enthusiasm after test drives and was spot on!! All while being friendly personable and genuinely enjoyable to be around. Well done!
