I was offered the 0.9 percent APR currently on being advertised from Subaru, but since I didn’t need it that’s as far as the discussion went. With respect to the dealership's explanation of final vehicle pricing... I’ve found that almost no dealership wants to be completely forthcoming. A 5 out of 5-star rating in this area would be a dealership that puts the vehicle’s factory invoice on the table at the beginning of the negotiations. Show the customer the unabridged truth by stating up front what you, the dealership, paid the manufacturer for the vehicle. In actuality, most well-informed customers know full well that there is a dealer holdback of something in the neighborhood of 1 to 3 percent of the vehicle’s MSRP, so by not placing the factory invoice on the table at the onset of negotiations it would suggest that the dealer is being less than completely transparent. I consider my sales representative, Joe Haga, to be a decent guy. My 5 of 5 star rating for him was largely based on his willingness to negotiate and what I saw that was, in my opinion, a genuine effort on his part to work to add in some additional items to sweeten the deal. My 4 out of 5 star overall rating for the dealership is based on the following: 1) I’ve only had the vehicle for less than a week and it has only 400 miles on it at this point; and 2) I haven’t had the opportunity to even test all of the features of the vehicle yet. My suggestion would be to limit this initial query on customer satisfaction to 1 simple question, “Are there any problems of issues that need to be addressed at this point?” If that answer is yes – address those issues; if that answer is no – tell the customer that you’d like to touch base again in 8 – 12 months – after the vehicle has gone through its break-in period and any issues have had a chance to become manifest. If, at that time, the customer complains about being on a first name basis with your dealership maintenance manager and having him on speed dial... Well, you’ll have a comprehensive and honest answer. More
