I recently had to replace my college-aged son's car and ended up at Spitzer Chevy in Northfield. We had a specific year, model, and price range in mind, and looked at a few vehicles. One of the options was ended up at Spitzer Chevy in Northfield. We had a specific year, model, and price range in mind, and looked at a few vehicles. One of the options was a 2017 Chevy with 88,000+ miles, priced at over $10,000. Due to the poor condition of my son's current car and his impending return to school, I felt pressure to act quickly. That urgency unfortunately clouded my judgment. We visited the dealership just before closing on a Saturday. While waiting for our trade-in to be evaluated, we overheard a high-pressure interaction between another customer and their sales rep. The GM told the couple that if they didn’t buy the car they were considering in the next 15 minutes, he was going to send it to auction. It was an extremely aggressive, uncomfortable tactic—and frankly should’ve been my first warning sign. When we received our quote, it included two add-on “security packages” totaling $1,300—neither of which we asked for. I left to discuss the situation with my wife, who was concerned about the high mileage, the price, and minor body damage. The next morning, I called our sales rep, Jacob, and made an offer $1,000 below the quote, asking them to remove the unnecessary add-ons. He said they’d remove the add-ons, but refused to negotiate on price at all. They showed no interest in working with us. Against my better judgment, and driven by safety concerns for my son, I went through with the purchase. That’s when I had to deal with the finance manager, Wally—who was rude, dismissive, and clearly more interested in upselling than helping. Despite my excellent credit score (825+), he initially offered me a loan with an inflated interest rate—because he stood to gain a kickback from the lender. Only after I pushed back did he reluctantly lower it, treating it like he was doing me a personal favor. He rushed through the paperwork, didn’t explain anything, and acted as if I was wasting his time. After the purchase, Jacob called to check in. I told him I was experiencing major buyer’s remorse and felt taken advantage of. I asked to speak with a manager. He said he’d pass along my concerns—but no one ever called. A week later, Jacob followed up again. I told him I was still unhappy and disappointed that no one had reached out. Again, he promised to relay the message. Again, no response. Looking back, the GM’s aggressive behavior, the unnecessary add-ons, the refusal to negotiate, the manipulative financing tactics, and the complete lack of post-sale support all point to one thing: this dealership does not care about its customers—only making a sale. I pride myself on being a careful consumer, but I let urgency and emotion cloud my judgment. I ended up with a car that wasn’t worth the price, from a dealership that treated me with indifference. Please learn from my experience: Avoid Spitzer Chevy in Northfield. If you value honesty, transparency, and customer service, look elsewhere. More
