The service was good. The people are nice and professional. Their business practices however are shady at best. I was in for an oil change and "complimentary" inspection. The people are nice and professional. Their business practices however are shady at best. I was in for an oil change and "complimentary" inspection. They sent me a video to show me my dirty air and cabin filters. They had inspected them as promised, asked if I wanted them replaced. I authorized the filters. They billed me around $60 labor to install the new ones. Essentially $60 dollars to open two boxes. I pointed out that there is no more effort to install the new filters than to have put the old filters back in. Same job,no difference. I called and spoke with Brock who explained it is their menu price and that he doesn't set the pricing. I asked if he thought it was an appropriate business policy. He couldn't answer such a difficult question so I asked to speak to Travis, the service manager. Travis called me back in timely fashion and was pleasant. I asked him the same question, do you feel this is a good and ethical business practice? He explained they do that so they can cover the cost of the technician having performed the "complimentary" inspections those times that nothing else was purchased. Then proceeded to explain that it was standard in the industry. It is not. Even if were to be considered standard, it doesn't make it right. I explained that by doing that he may as well tell me I don't want your business without saying it out loud. He offered to refund my 60 dollars, but would not admit that charging someone to install a new filter while not charging to put the old one back in is an unethical practice. I declined the refund. That is not why I called. I want them to cease taking advantage of their patrons. I asked if they would stop. He said, "I can tell you that I will not change my policy based on our discussion." Fair enough. I now understand that Toyota of Des Moines has no desire to run an honest and reputable business. I won't be back. I also know they do not care if I come back. It's not about the money, it's about right and wrong. I urge anyone reading this to strongly reconsider doing any business with these folks. It really is too bad. Driven Chevrolet trucks over 40 years. Been eyeballing a gorgeous deep brown Tundra they have on the lot. Seriously thought about giving a Toyota truck a shot as I am ready to replace my Silverado. Never been charged labor at a Chevy dealer to install a filter, although according to Travis it is a standard industry practice. Guess I'm not gonna switch to Toyota afterall. P.S. - this is coming from a guy that has spent over 30 years in automotive sevice management. More
