Suspect Catalytic Converter ignored I brought my 2015 Toyota Highlander to Byers Toyota in Delware, Ohio on 12/17 after talking with my mechanic in Powell Ohio the week before. I took m I brought my 2015 Toyota Highlander to Byers Toyota in Delware, Ohio on 12/17 after talking with my mechanic in Powell Ohio the week before. I took my car to my reputable mechanic (Wayne’s Auto Repair) because I felt like I could smell exhaust or gas in the car cabin, there was a rattling sound towards the front / underneath of the car and the car when cold had no pickup and revved high while hesitating (all of these issues only appeared in the last 2 months and not before – I have owned the car almost 3 years). He told me the car needed a new catalytic converter based on a visual inspection. He said he could hear parts/pieces that had broken off in the catalytic converter when he pushed on it. He told me to take it to a Toyota dealer since I was still under the Emissions warranty. He even suggested that I go to Byers as that is where he gets parts when he needed them. So I called Byers and I knew from the very beginning of the conversation that they were going to be difficult. I told them exactly what my mechanic said and they at first acted like they did not know what the warranty limits were, having to check with several people to get the specifics before they would even make an appointment. I would think all Toyota dealers’ service personnel know the warranty specifics in detail. In the end I was able to make an appointment to take the car in for an inspection. Got there and waited and in about 45 minutes Tara came out and said there was nothing wrong with my car. I said I didn’t believe that. I asked her if it was normal to have a gas or exhaust smell in the cabin and she said “Yes”. She then said it was normal for my car to hesitate and rev when cold even though I was pushing on the gas. What about the rattling / jingling sound under the car? Normal again. At no time have I ever owned a car that had these symptoms, so I don’t see how they are “normal”. Of course, I have owned 4 Honda products before this car, 1 Honda and 3 Acura. My last car (MDX) I still have and its 13 years old and have never had any of these issues, so I don’t believe these issues are normal. They said because it was not throwing an error code they could not do anything. No other explanation like it’s caused by bad spark plugs, need of a tune-up, etc. Nothing. I protested and they relented and held it overnight to retest. The next day, they did see for themselves the hesitation but that was again deemed “normal”. I asked if they did a visual inspection like my mechanic did on the catalytic converter and they claimed yes. They also claimed that there would be no rattling coming from the front of the car that would be caused by broken off pieces in the catalytic converter. I believe my regular mechanic. He is not making any money on this issue and he was good enough to tell me what it was. It does not seem Toyota stands behind their product and I am questioning my purchase as none of my other cars have ever had issues like these. I will be very annoyed if down the road, I am unable to drive the car because a bad catalytic converter appears again just when my warranty ends. Jackie More
