I explained that they had a brand new vehicle on their lot that my parents wanted to purchase. I told Zack that this was a cash deal and that sales tax did not apply (registered in a state with no sales tax). He stammered at my request and claimed that company policy dictated that we come to the store to work on this deal. I stopped him right on the spot and explained that we would not drive from an hour away without the deal being done. We negotiated for $2,000 off MSRP to a final price. I asked him on the phone if this included D&H and everything except a registration fee that we were uncertain of at that point. He said “yes” and I again asked him for the “final” price via text message. The following morning we proceeded to the dealership and Zack was “busy” with another customer and pawned us off to another salesman. We test drove the vehicle and inspected it. Finally we went inside. This is where the fun began. Nobody seemed to know what price we had agreed to except me. There was no buy sheet even created. I told the salesman what the negotiated price was and he came back with a buy sheet that what $1,502.20 higher than what we agreed to. I quickly looked over the sheet and spotted multiples problems. They were charging $899 for “accessories” and $599 for D&H and $7.20 for the title fee. I immediately shut this down and told them this was unacceptable. Zack came over to give his best shot of convincing me why his price was right. I simply told Zack, “I never asked for your accessories, take them off, and I’m not paying your D&H as you said it was included”. He immediately denied this. I proceeded to show him the text message indicating the “final” price. He stammered again and said “final doesn’t mean final”. After some back and forth, I laughed and we got up to leave. He asked us to wait and came back with a buy sheet that was $106.20 higher than our “final” price from the day before. I immediately balked again. Now the manager came out. Things go heated fast. He insulted me calling me “hostile” telling me that “this is supposed to me a fun experience and you’re making it hostile, why”. I barked back “because you all are playing a game. I’m hungry and want to get out of here. You can either honor the final price we discussed yesterday or we are leaving”. Finally he acquiesced and agreed to the final number. The F&I manager was great and did not try to push extras on us. It’s sad to see that some car dealerships behave like mob style 1980s xxxxx. This was a very easy deal in cash, no sales tax, no extras and they turned it into a complicated process by trying to confuse my parents. I suspect they realized that we were not going to buy anything on top of this deal and that there would be no financing for the dealer to mark up the interest rate to pad their profits. The first thing I did when we got home was remove their dealership sticker and license plate frame and threw them away. The bait and switch didn’t work and now Corwin Toyota will get my poor review along with permanently losing my business for future car purchases and service. More
