Pushed toward a brand I wasn't interested in I initially went into this dealership wanting to buy a new (or used) Ford SUV. I had made an appointment a couple days prior to showing up. When I arr I initially went into this dealership wanting to buy a new (or used) Ford SUV. I had made an appointment a couple days prior to showing up. When I arrived, I was immediately met by someone who works for their sister dealership, the Mitsubishi dealership right next door. The salesman was very courteous and asked what I was looking for. I told him in no uncertain terms that I was looking for a midsize SUV, and that I had an appointment with someone. He asked if I had considered a Mitsubishi, and I said that I preferred to stay with the Ford brand. He went to find the person I made an appointment with, and when he returned he informed me that she was in a meeting, and said he could help. I let him know that I was fine waiting for the individual I had scheduled an appointment with, and he left. The person I made the appointment with showed up five to ten minutes after our scheduled meeting time, and promptly passed me off to another saleswoman (Trudy, who was fantastic). Trudy initially showed me a couple different SUVs that I was interested in. She also took my vehicle that I was trading in to their assessor. She worked with a couple individuals, who's names I didn't catch. After showing a couple of Ford SUVs, one of the salesmen pulled up a Mitsubishi SUV, and asked me if I wanted to take a look at it. He further told me that it would better fit the monthly payments that I was trying to keep, whereas the Ford that I was considering would be more expensive. A few days after making this purchase, I had the opportunity to speak with the general manager for the dealership. I was initial very upset with the way that the sales floor employees ended up selling me the Mitsubishi. Ken, the GM, explained to me that (in a nutshell), the sales floor should have explained to me some of the intricacies of how a bank approves a loan on used vehicles versus new vehicles. He further explained to me how that works, and why sales continued to come back to the new Mitsubishi, rather than the used Ford that I was looking at. All-in-all, despite some initial communication failures by the sales staff, I'm happy with the new car I purchased, and I'm extremely pleased with the deal that I got for trading in my vehicle (it was significantly more than I expected to get). I think that the sales floor team could perhaps improve on their communication skills, and be more open about what's going on when there's a customer that's actively trying to make a purchase. The days of making a hard sale are in the past - today's generation needs to feel trust and have confidence in their purchases, and more importantly, in the company and individuals they're making that purchase from.
