I went in to Freehold Hyandai on August 6th or 13th, I can't remember which day. I immediately met with a salesman and since this was the first dealership I had visited and had just decided that I was in can't remember which day. I immediately met with a salesman and since this was the first dealership I had visited and had just decided that I was in the market for a new car, I had intended to utilize the sales staff to help me define my requirement and point me to the right car. Right from the beginning, the communication coming from the salesman was quite nebulous and confusing. He took a while to get answers for me and after test driving a pre-owned Sonata (and not impressed with the price at all) my salesman vanished and I was approached by a seemingly very experienced salesman (Pete, large man). Despite his obvious penchant for a fast, shotgun numbers type of approach (which is off putting), he was nice enough and actually the only sales person I came across that I respected (because he was probably the only person there smart enough to pull off that kind of approach). After writing number after number (with what I would learn later was suspicious data inputs for calculation) he offered a low monthly lease payment for a brand new Sonata. I wasn't in the market for a lease but figured, ok, this may work. I asked quite a few times what are some general obligations, restrictions, prohibitions to leasing vs. buying. I was given the very basic mile overage etc. Despite Pete's best efforts (again he was the only person there that I liked or respected) I would not walk out that day with a car because as I had repeatedly told him...I did not intend to. After I had made my point clear enough, my original salesman miraculously appeared to set up a time that I would come back. Yesterday, August 31st, I met the original salesman and was ready to buy (lease) that night as long as they didn't do anything to show me that they lack integrity. I was not in the mood for games as I had a number (granted not official) that I was happy with. Almost immediately the games began. I was first frustrated that I had to wait around for almost 30 minutes after my appointment time while the salesman figured out the logistics of getting me to the car I wanted and bringing it back from their off-site lot. In the car ride over with my salesman and another salesman they engaged in unprofessional behavior which is fine but these things show you the true character of a person. They also revealed the ethical standards of the young salesman at the dealership who create fake email addresses to send themselves fabricated customer satisfaction surveys. I would later learn that these surveys are like an obsession to them. They beg customers to give them all 10s on the survey which is interesting to me because that means that any marginal deviation is looked down upon and can be severe in terms of their professional evaluation. This kind of system does not allow for valid customer feedback with which they can use to improve on their service (which obviously they are not interested in, despite my salesman's claims that he takes care of people). Organizational culture flows from top to bottom so you can see by the low level salesman what the managers and leadership are like. To divert for a moment, the younger salesman look like "townies" who have no understanding of integrity or professionalism, so I'm not surprised that they would engage in customer/quality manipulation, if that are willing to do that...imagine what they are willing to do to their "customers." So I get to the car that I thought I would be buying and drive it back to the dealership, which is where the games begin. For some reason, despite given a preliminary number the last time I was there, we started talking numbers again. After looking at my trade in, the salesman kept saying "less than a grand" would be offered but it took a while to actually get to the exact number. This showed me a reluctance to be open and transparent. He said that the number I received earlier didn't include inception fees which would bring it up with the number I had offered to put down and the trade in. Up over $50 a month. I asked what they could do for me and expressed my discontent at the game I was now seeing. A few fake visits to the main manager and in comes a floor manager of sorts. Not sure if that's the right title but he wasn't the main guy. Used car salesman stereotype persona to the extreme. He tried to play a shell game of getting to my number by asking me to put more down which is nonsense. I said repeatedly I was given a number last time, and I wanted that number. I even went up $10 a month from that number and said that's my limit. A few back and forths and I told them that I'm under no pressure to buy tonight and thank you but I'm leaving. A few more trips to the main manager and "wish me luck" salesman act (which was really offensive) and boom I conceded $250 more on the down payment and they got me to $4 a month over my limit. We agreed in theory and I asked them again, what are some things (restrictions, obligations, and prohibitions) on the lease vs. buy...last time before I go into the finance office and am surprised. Nothing but the basics and was told, "You’ll sort that out in there." I did NOT appreciate that. I lack respect for someone who supposedly cares enough about their customers to claim that they "take care of them" but doesn't care enough to answer simple questions before I'm thrust into the last moments of a sale when I'll be pressured into possibly accepting terms and conditions that I am not comfortable with. Also, the NERVE to again beg for a perfect 10 survey after the sale was agreed upon in theory. The salesman rushed about to get the process in order and I looked around the office again; I did not like what I saw. If determinations can be made solely on appearance this place looked like a fly by night scam shop. Unkempt appearance, smug facial expressions and body language that suggests dishonesty. The bad feeling was starting to set in, that along with the fact that they tried to get me for over what they had preliminarily agreed to before AND they were reluctant to answer questions and eager to throw me into the signing stage. Unluckily for my salesman, I am a veteran and have USAA insurance which has 24 hour service. When he was completing the insurance paperwork, a representative from USAA told me about the coverage requirements for leases. Long story short, I would have to have upped my coverage quite a bit and the savings from leasing vs. buying were negated for me. To me, there’s no point to leasing if you can purchase for the same amount (which to me was what it would work out to be monthly given the expanded insurance requirements). I asked them what they require for a lease and my salesman said "they will figure that out in the finance office." I got off the phone with my insurance representative and told the salesman that I would be leaving. I picked up my keys and started to walk about. They started to question me and when I told them they started to put everything back on me. I walked out of the office towards my car and they followed me out. I told them that I asked what kind of conditions go along with a lease (a GENERAL question) and they did not mention the insurance issue. As we were standing outside they removed themselves from any accountability and said "we're not insurance agents, you didn't ask us about insurance." Ok, so you guys deserve perfect customer satisfaction surveys but you are too provincial to consider my question in a broader context and let me know that leases have very high coverage requirements. His next rebuttal was that he didn't know my current coverage and he's right but he could have answered in a way like "I don't know what your current insurance coverage is but be aware that leasing requires higher level coverage." Mind you, my coverage is middle of the road which brings me to the next thing he said (the floor manager type) "well how am I supposed to know you have astronomical deductibles and you should have looked into that yourself before." The sales team that deserves these high score customer feedback surveys assume that I cheap out on my insurance coverage and are not helpful enough to steer their customers in the right direction. Out comes basically the whole staff to view the yelling match outside and the finance guy comes over and in a smug, very slangy tone says "this is what you're upset over?" They approached me as if to confront me which I also did not appreciate, that and the half wits that come outside like children to watch a fight. I kept trying to leave and like the petulant child the floor manager was, he kept trying to talk to me and even tapped on my window which infuriated me but I did not want to do anything that I would regret so I just pulled away and left. Literally the worst car buying experience aside from the scammers I had encountered while in the military that operate near bases to take advantage of young troops. They play the worst and most obvious games and think that they are not detected. They give car salesman a bad name, seemingly uneducated and unethical people lacking morals who to try and get over on everyday people. *UPDATE: The salesman called yesterday, said he did nothing wrong and didn't seem like he had listened to any of what I had said the night before. He said "I've never seen anything like that happen over insurance deductibles." If he and they had listened and not disregarded my requests, they may not have lost the sale. After I got off of the phone with the insurance rep. I asked him, about what the coverage needs to be, he didn't even look up from the paper he was filling out and said, "I don't know ask them in there." His manager refused to listen as well. His manager does not let the customer talk at all and I had to correct his manners a few times throughout. Luckily for me, I got a price for the same car that was almost $4,000 less than what this xxxxxxx outfit was going to charge me before they tried to push me into a lease. More

Went in and saw Rich who kept claiming he was new, but seemed to know too much for someone brand new there who said they never sold cars before. Looked at a car and was able to do a test drive. We wanted to do a trade-in, so told them what we had and of course they played the 'how much do you want game'. the KBB wholesale value was listed at $4000. He talks to his manager who offers us $500.00 for the car. THAT'S AN INSULT! When I said forget it all the manage supposed started making calls and came up with 2500-3000., but couldn't commit yet. If they would have come up with a close value to start I would have negotiated, but to offer 8x less than KBB is downright bad and acting like we are stupid. We couldn't wait to get out the door! The sales guy kept calling us for days after that. When I did talk to him I asked him to stop and that there was no way in the world we would ever buy from them. I mentioned he should tell his manager if was because of that offer, but he acted like he really didn't care and that was a normal offer. STAY AWAY!!!! More

So far, so 'not-so-good'. Sandy, the internet manager is responsive and pleasant - good marks there. Mike Q, the sales person who showed me the car was pleasant and appropriate. I contacted five CNJ dealers via internet to test-drive a Sonata Hybrid when they first were on sale stating I wanted best price and was ready to buy that day. I had a nasty experience with Davis Hyundai (check out their better business bureau rating--it fits!) robo-calling me and chose to end my association with them before even walking in the door. I knew to avoid Brad Benson (their better business bureau rating is equally scary) with a ten foot pole. I received a quote from Flemington that was $100 below MSRP and no quotes from a PA dealer and another in NJ. I received a quote from Freehold that mentioned a number of possible discounts but wasn't sure I qualified for any of them. I called Freehold and Sandy picked up the phone and stated I should call her back within an hour of my arrival time to make sure the car hadn't sold. It hadn't and so I test drove it and liked it well enough to negotiate a price on one of the color I sought. Sandy was warm, funny, and made a great first impression. I was surprised though that she would not be the salesperson. She introduced me to Bob who was new on the job. He was ok, but clearly did not know the car's unique features. As price negotiations went on, Sales Manager Laura was the heavy negotiator. I had asked Sandy at one point if the car window etching was required by the state of NJ, pretty sure that it wasn't. She said point blank it was. I left it at that and walked out with a pretty decent price well below MSRP as I negotiated from the dealer cost figure up. It took several weeks to order the car I wanted and Laura was great about making sure it came in prior to the deadline when I needed it. She also knocked $100 off the dealer glass etching price when we wrote up the final bill, as I had done my homework with the DMV and found out it was not mandatory in NJ (and on their sales contract--not the order "contract" it clearly states it is optional). I also questioned the $500 doc fee and found that excessive. Other than that, and really bad phones/people who answer the phones, I thought the price was fair and the deal ok. But watch the form they write the "order" up on--it's not the same as the sales contract and in buying nine new cars, it's the first time I've ever not had a copy of the original sales contact going home. The funniest part was finishing up the sale with the closer, Lorenzo, who was fine other than he ends every sentence with....."my friend." I'm your customer! That made me laugh. Considering all the CNJ better business bureau rankings for Hyundai dealers are really bad, I did ok, but buyer beware. I did send an email to Hyundai corporate asking why CNJ Hyundai dealers have such bad better business bureau ratings, but I never received a response. More

Would absolutly NOT recommend Freehold Hyuandi. I went with my gut and didn't even try to negociate with the sales manager after wasting over an hour there. I had no surprises when signing the paperwork and they even delivered the car to my home the next morning! It's worth the drive. An overall EXCELLENT experience with Lester Glen! Shame on you Freehold Hyuandi. More

I was looking for a used car for my son and on Thursday, April 28th, I saw a 2003 Santa Fe on the Freehold Hyundai website, which had a "Make an Offer" link. I then received an email stating they were considering my offer, followed by a 2nd telling me to come in to see the car. Before doing so I called and spoke with sales manager Aaron Brown, and explained I needed to confirm the price before I came in because I had a limited budget, and he said that if I made a offer and they asked me to come in, that meant my offer was accepted. That evening I met with Aaron and a salesman, Andrew Lawrence. I drove the car, and the next day, April 29th, my husband went and drove the car. We were interested in buying it but there were some issues, and I went back to the dealer on April 30th to talk to Andrew about it, and he said I could take the car to a mechanic. I asked Andrew to confirm the price before I went through the expense of taking the car to my mechanic, and he went into an office and spoke with another manager who said that if I made an offer and they kept having me come back, that meant they were accepting my offer or something close to it. On Monday, May 2nd, my husband drove the car to a mechanic, had it inspected, and we decided to buy it. When they discussed price, Aaron said that the price of the car was $6950, and insisted that I offered $6950. My husband called me from the dealer and i spoke to Aaron who denied he ever told me that my offer was accepted. He said he didn't even know what what my offer was and that he doesn't look up offers because he is the sales dept, not the internet dept. The salesperson, Andrew, admitted that I never offered $6950. Apparently this was the sticker price and Andrew assumed I offered it. He also admitted that the other manager he spoke with on April 30th not Aaron) told him they were accepting my offer. My husband asked them to for a copy of the offer I submitted, to see whether it was $4750 or $6950, and they responded that they could not find it. I do not have a copy of my offer because it was submitted to them by keying it in to their website, not sent by email. They offered to come down to $6500, which was not in my budget,and refused to refund me the $92 I spent having the car inspected. It is inconceivable that no one confirmed what my actual offer was. The staff was careless in handling this matter, to my detriment, and instead of admitting they had made an error in the way the potential sale was handled, they made false statements about what happened. Potential customers need to know that this dealarship is not conscientious or honest. More
