I have been meaning to review my car buying experience with Edmond of Marin Acura. I’m just going to tell you now… If you’re looking for an Acura don’t look farther. To give you some background, I’ve been leasing Acura MDXs since 2014. Leasing is better for me for various reasons, but it’s basically the same as buying a new car from the dealer’s perspective. You negotiate the best price and then they work with Honda / Acura leasing to make the lease work. If you have a previous Acura lease, you can also get some perks when leasing another Acura, and Marin Acura made my transition to a new lease really about as awesome as you could get, with about 4 months of ‘early lease’ payments waived. This means I got out of my old lease 4 months early, and also since I had a lot of unused mileage on my old MDX I was able to apply that unused mileage to my new car and get a less expensive lower-mileage lease. I have been shopping for new cars for decades, and to be honest, while it has gotten a little bit better, I feel like the car buying process is kind of broken. The internet has made it a bit more streamlined, as you can get information about deal costs etc to allow you to negotiate better, but really once you enter the dealership, and at best expect to spend the whole day there being worn down by a nice salesperson, and at worse just agreeing to an unattractive deal to get it over with. If you’ve ever bought a new care you know what I mean. Now back this buying experience: I had shopped for MDXs at another dealer very close to me (not Marin Acura), and though the salesperson was very pleasant, it took him forever to get a quote, with many trips to the ‘back room’. It’s kind of like a football game… if you actually calculate the amount of actual ‘action’ in the game is a couple of minutes, though the game will take you half a day to watch. You can use a DVR to ‘skip’ and take back some of your valuable time, but until now there was no “Car Buying DVR”. Enter Edmond Kim. I had put the word on an internet car buying site that I was interested in a new MDX which was sent to a number of Bay Area Acura Dealers. Edmond emailed me first, and I told him what I wanted, but I also was honest with him that his dealership wasn’t that attractive to me because it was in Marin, and I was on the Peninsula, close to San Francisco. If I went there to get a new MDX, not only would I be spending at least a couple of hours getting there, but then I’d have to endure the inevitable car buying experience. Not with Edmond. Once we’d emailed a couple times we spoke on the phone and I told him exactly what I wanted, and my concerns about the commute to his dealership. Surprisingly, he offered to drive the car to me to and take my turned in lease car with him, and not only that, provided an excellent deal on the price of the new car and the lease. Later that evening he showed up at my home in Brisbane with the new MDX, all shiny and white. I could tell instantly that he was very polite, well dressed, and professional - a really high-quality person. We spent about 15 minutes signing papers, I inspected the car and he ran through a few settings for me, and that was it. With a little bit of small talk I found out that Edmond had some experience in the ‘business-finance’ side of the dealership, and this allowed him to ‘short-cut’ some of the things in the car buying process that can make a deal slower than it should be. We’ve communicated several times after the sale, and Edmond is a great communicator, and his responses were prompt and helpful. I’m writing this review because I feel that people like Edmond should be acknowledged for their work ethic and skill. These days that combination extremely rare. To sum up all I have to say, once again, is that if you are in the market for an Acura, look no further than Edmond Kim of Marin Acura! More
