I notified the dealer I was on my way just before I left my house at 2:00 in the afternoon and there was no mention the car was sold that morning. “They are very busy and can’t keep track.” I agreed to see other models, because if the deal was right, the drive terrain was not a deal breaker. After a test drive I asked about price and was told after the $3,500 Quality Discount the price was $39,680. I asked if there were any other incentives, and they asked if I was in the military or a first responder to qualify for the additional $1,500 off. I said I was not, but my late husband was a local fireman who died in the line of duty last year. The salesman chuckled a little and said that doesn’t qualify. I said I was an educator, and he said, “that will get you an additional $500 off, better than nothing, right?” So at this point we’re looking at $39,080. We start negotiating the deal and I wanted the value of my trade and the bottom-line price on the new vehicle separate. The salesman was very reluctant to do this (its much harder to manipulate the numbers this way) and ultimately, I got the combined offer (new car + trade) and the trade alone. Only at this time was I told I would have to go through GM financing to obtain the $3,5000 Quality Discount. Interesting because on the dealer website for the $3,500 Quality Discount it makes no mention of needing to use GM financing which was 2% higher than my credit union. The fine print even states “EVERYONE QUALIFIES” in capital letters. Oddly enough, for the additional $1,500 off that I did not qualify for, it does specifically state GM financing is required to qualify. Ultimately, I was presented with two scenarios, one with the GM financing, Quality Discount and Educator incentive and one with my own financing, “a generous dealer discount that was less than the Quality Discount” and the educator incentive. Not only was the initial price of the vehicle on GM financing offer OVER the advertised price of $39,080 (with the Quality Discount & educator incentive) but they slapped on nearly 4K in dealer add-ons that were never addressed until I questioned the line item, and the sales pitch was “everyone is doing it”. They also tried to convince me that financing with GM (at a rate 2% higher than my credit union) would save me over $1,000 in interest over the life of the loan. Everything about this interaction felt deceiving and has left me reconsidering the brand all together. More
