Yesterday, Sunday March 27, 2022, my son and I decided to spend the afternoon car shopping. We stopped at Tasca Jeep in Johnston RI as part of the afternoon and wished we hadn’t!!! My son, who is extremely excited to be shopping for a new vehicle, has been building the Jeep he wants a minimum of hundred times online. In addition he has called around and asked about pricing at local dealerships. Tasca wasn’t a dealership on his list he had called. Armed with this information, having saved his money to buy the car cash, he decided it was time to ask dad to help him with buying a Jeep. The last hurdle for him, parents permission! After looking over all his information and financials, my wife and I agreed to help. Sunday was the day we decided was best for us. Usually a slower day of the week for us. I felt it would be the best opportunity to educate my son on making a large financial commitment. While explaining how you should always gather your facts, due diligence, and then make an educated decision. Always stressing never rush into a decision if you have the time. After visiting a couple dealerships in Massachusetts, I told my son I had purchased a couple new cars from a dealership named Tasca. I asked him to look them up and see if they had a Jeep dealership. He did and we realized they had one in Johnston RI, which was only 25-30 minutes down the road from where we were. We decided to try them. At the dealership we met with a salesperson who was on the floor. He identified himself at the time, but his name slips my memory. Possibly Michael Carbone. We explained why we were at the dealership, knew exactly what we wanted, and asked if he would price out the vehicle (We’re fully aware this vehicle has to be ordered based on the options my son wants). The salesperson replied the price is whatever the sticker is or MSRP. I informed him that was fine. I explained I wasn’t looking to go back and forth but simply wanted a hard number to refer too. He asked us if we had a print out of the vehicle and I advised him we didn’t. The salesperson once again stated it’s going to be that price. Once again I asked for a hard number to have for a reference. At this point he asked what we wanted and wrote everything down on a piece of paper that my son told him he wanted. My son did this from memory because he didn’t even open a build screen for us. The salesperson took his sheet and walked over to the managers area and returned shortly after with a price. It was off by a few hundred dollars compared to what my son had built previously online. My son asked to check the sheet and noticed what was missing. After going back to the managers area he returned with the updated price, which was now inline with what my son was looking at online on the Jeep build website. It was MSRP or what I believe to be the sticker price. The salesperson stated this is what we can sell the vehicle to you for. At this point we thanked him and began to get up to leave. We didn’t want the experience of going back and forth, plus I was in the middle of a Zoom meeting on my phone, but still wanted to help my son who asked for assistance. At this point the salesperson person asked for a moment so he could either speak to his manager or get his manager. The very experience I wasn’t looking for. I wasn’t looking to have a back and forth sales experience. I just wanted a best price offer the first time. At this point the manager came over as we were getting up and starting to the door. He identified himself as the Sales Manager Steve. Steve stated he didn’t want to lose the business and asked me what would it take to make the sale, a thousand off. I replied to him the cheapest price is what I was looking for. Steve replied the cheapest price for you and me is the best. Steve continued to ask me for the number I was looking for. I informed Steve I was aware the vehicle cost around $61,000 dollars and told him to sell me the vehicle at cost. Steve replied he couldn’t do that. Steve continued and said there is a reason you came from Massachusetts to Rhode Island. It wasn’t because you got a good deal. At this point my son and I decided to leave. At the time I was half vested into the experience because I was in the middle of a Zoom meeting. After sitting down with my son and hearing from him of how unpleasant the experience was at Tasca I decided it was time to share!! Steve you are right. There was a reason I drove to Tasca from Massachusetts. It was because of my past experiences of buying a vehicle at the Cranston and Seekonk locations. I dealt with George Shakel who was a professional from the start to the finish of a deal, which I informed you of. Another reason was it was an experience and education process for my son. I wanted him to get hard numbers and then make a decision on his purchase, which doesn’t appear is going to be with you. Steve, I want you to know we did get a great deal in Massachusetts before visiting your dealership. Without the back and forth experience. It was the first and only price offered from the dealership. I’m happy to share the dealership with you but can’t for obvious reasons. It was our first stop because my son stated, from previously calling around, it was going to be the best. I was the one who wanted him to get multiple offers in writing before he made this purchase. I wanted him to make an educated decision. Have a great day!!!! More
