We visited EchoPark in Avondale because we were interested in purchasing a Lucid and potentially trading in our 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited. We provided our salesperson, Damian, with the interested in purchasing a Lucid and potentially trading in our 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited. After speaking with the dealership’s buyer, Damian told us the trade-in value would be a minimum of $23,000, pending an in-person review. Because I wanted to make sure I understood the offer correctly before returning, I asked Damian to confirm it in writing. He texted, “Could be more after we see it, but that would be the minimum.” He later repeated that the buyer had said a minimum of $23,000, told me I had it in writing through his text, and said EchoPark “doesn’t play games here.” We continued visiting other dealerships and returned to EchoPark later that afternoon. By that time, the Lucid we had originally looked at was already in the process of being sold. We understood that vehicles can sell quickly and did not hold that against the dealership. We still decided to have our Hyundai appraised because we were open to considering another vehicle. After inspecting our Hyundai, EchoPark offered us $20,000, which was $3,000 below the minimum Damian had repeatedly confirmed earlier that day. When we questioned the difference, the conversation with the buyer felt defensive and argumentative rather than focused on clearly explaining why the written minimum had changed. What bothered us most was the lack of ownership after the discrepancy became clear. Damian had been the person communicating with us throughout the day and repeatedly assuring us that $23,000 was the minimum after checking with the buyer. I understand he was assisting other customers, but he did not meaningfully help explain or resolve the conflicting information once we returned. We asked to speak with the manager, Christian. After reviewing the situation, he returned with an offer of $22,000 and said there was an issue with the sunroof. The sunroof had opened and closed normally in our experience, and no specific malfunction was demonstrated or clearly explained to us. Christian later sent the offer in writing and explained that the $22,000 included a temporary $500 promotional bonus. That meant the underlying appraisal was $21,500, still $1,500 below the written $23,000 minimum. Our issue was not simply that the final appraisal was lower than we wanted. We understood that an offer could change after an inspection if a legitimate condition issue was discovered. The concern was that $23,000 had repeatedly been presented as the minimum, with the possibility of going higher after inspection, yet both the initial and final offers were below that amount. Based on our experience, future customers should ask whether a trade-in figure is truly a minimum or only a preliminary estimate, keep all communications in writing, and be prepared for the in-person offer to differ from what was previously communicated. The conflicting information and the way the situation was handled caused us to lose confidence and walk away. More
