Everything you would expect from a dealership The Good; My salesman Jim Allison was very nice, friendly, and knowledgable. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing a used car and had very few The Good; My salesman Jim Allison was very nice, friendly, and knowledgable. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing a used car and had very few questions about the car or the process involved. Mr. Allison recognized that I was in no mood for the salesman pitch after driving 210 miles one way to look at this car. Mr. Allison let me crawl around take pictures, and even take an unaccompanied test drive, offered me something to lay on while under the car, bottles of water, and anything else I might need to make me feel good about the purchase. Mr. Allison did everything to make the car buying process easy. The Bad: We agreed and a very good price for the vehicle, there was only a minor issue of some rust on the undercarriage that I was able to repair on my own. Then when the deal sheet came across the table is when it all started going south. right off the bat a "Documentation fee" of $999 seemed a bit excessive to me. The average fee in the state of Florida is $607. When I brought this to Mr. Allison's attention he advised it was pretty standard for the area. Mr. Allison when and spoke to the finance guy who came back and advised they could not charge me one documentation fee and someone else another. Then I asked if that was the case I would like them to take the difference off of the car's price, and was told: "we can't do that." I did verify that the $999 cost is very common in the greater Tampa area (still too high). The next thing that bothered me was the $500 tag and registration fee. I was advised that was a ballpark price and it would likely go down to $400 plus dollars. I advised them in the state of Florida it does not cost that much for a tag on a new vehicle citing the correct price of $225. I then asked three separate times for an itemized breakdown of both the Registration and the Documentation Fee, each time I was denied that request and redirected to something else. My wife spoke in private and agreed that in the end, it was not worth arguing over a few hundred dollars and agreed to move forward with the deal. My credit was run, and prior to signing the release to allow them to do so I asked to see all of the rates from their preferred lenders and was told that would not be an issue. Needless to say, I was never shown the rates or options for financing. I was shown the rates of one lender, and while their might have been a slightly lower interest rate or a vastly higher interest rate with the other lenders I would have liked to have seen the numbers for myself. Conclusion: I bought the car, it was about $1600 less than the market value and they did come off of the inflated made up charges a tiny bit. I found that the reason the tag fee was so high is that they use a third party to do so that charges $99 fee to do something I could have done on my own time. When asked if they could assigned a temp tag and I would take care of the tag back home they advised they could not do that. However, through my research it is a common practice a used car lots for them to assign a paper temp tag and the buyer to get their tag on their own. I also wanted a specialty tag and when I asked if I could pay more and have the tag I wanted they advised they wouldn't be able to do that and I would have to get that taken care of back at home. At the end of the day, I got a nice, new to me car at a fair price, however, I would have liked a little more transparency at the end of the dealership. I am happy with my purchase but not too pleased with the overall experience. More
