Dishonesty My check engine light came on so I went to Auto Zone & they diagnosed the problem as cylinder #2 misfire detected. I brought my car to Audi. Eric (ser My check engine light came on so I went to Auto Zone & they diagnosed the problem as cylinder #2 misfire detected. I brought my car to Audi. Eric (service writer) told me the diagnostic fee of $150 would be included in whatever work I have done & if I didn’t move forward w/any work I would owe the $150. They told me the problem could be my spark plugs or a coil but the problem seems intermittent. They suggested replacing the spark plugs at a cost of $325 (there are 4). Red flag #1 b/c the cost of a spark plug is $13.48 & it takes about 20 min to change them. They were obviously overcharging me so I declined replacing the spark plugs. They also said my water pump was leaking. I told them to proceed w/the water pump. While leaving Eric suggested a coolant flush so I said ok & left. I contacted my dad who is a certified heavy equipment mechanic for the last 39 years & he said in order to replace the water pump the coolant needs to be removed so a coolant flush (for an add fee of $160 but giving me $100 off) is not necessary – red flag #2. I called Audi & told them not to do the coolant flush. Audi then called me a few hours later & said the radiator was also leaking. Eric said he would send photos of both leaks to my dad. The photos Eric sent were plastic radiator tanks (he told my dad they were aluminum) & the water pump. None of the photos showed any leaks – red flag #3. My dad said don’t do anything, I’m coming up there. He went there & the mechanic showed him the side of the engine (not the water pump or radiator) & said look at the leak. He said there is no leak, the mechanic said trust me it’s leaking. He said did you put a pressure test on it? The mechanic said no (red flag #4 no proof of leak) then my dad said just go ahead & fix it but forget the radiator. My dad asked about the amount for the spark plugs & Eric said their book time is 1hr & on a Saturday they charge time & a half (which is $225/hr). This was never disclosed to us & is not written on the invoice to inform their customers – red flag #5. So $325 - $225 (only takes 20 min not an hr) = $100 left over for parts which is $25/plug (an upcharge of $11.52/plug). My fiancé went to pick up my car & they put the diagnostic fee on the bill. He asked why it was on the bill when we were told it would be included if any work is done & they said they ran different diagnostics for the water pump & radiator (this was never explained to us – they took $100 off) – red flag #6. We took my car to the body shop where it was repaired from a front end collision a few years ago to have them check out the radiator since it was replaced from the accident & is still under warranty for life. They did a pressure test & there was no issue w/the radiator – red flag #7. My dad spoke w/Andy (service manager) & explained everything that happened. Andy stuck up for his guys & said my dad must have misunderstood. He said my dad was mistaken, his guys would never say they charge time & a half & if the car didn’t need something repaired they wouldn’t say it does. My dad asked if they get paid by commission & he said yes & if he came in there they’d be glad to show him what they did. My dad said the bridge is burned at this point b/c of the dishonesty. Andy’s rebuttal to everything was that my dad must have misunderstood & didn’t have 1 straight answer. My dad told him that the radiator was pressure tested & there was nothing wrong w/it. Andy said it had a small leak in it by the drain & you could only see it w/a mirror. My dad said if that were the case why wasn’t he shown that. My dad said the whole ordeal was dishonest, he’ll never come back to Hoffman Estates Audi & he’ll never recommend them to anyone. I’ve owned an Audi since 2012 & have only gone to Hoffman Estates Audi for every single service I have ever needed. I am very disappointed w/this dealership & Audi has lost a loyal customer. More
