We're sorry to hear about your experience. After reviewing your car deal the only optional product you purchased was a three year road hazard warranty in the amount of $362, which is no where near the 10% increase on a sale price of $23828 you stated in your review. Perhaps you are referring to the mandatory vehicle fees that are charged by the state of Texas in order to register your vehicle in the state of Texas, which include the following: 6.25% sales tax, $58.85 license fee, $28.00 title fee, $7.00 state inspection fee, $11.50 county road fee, $1.00 D.P.S. fee, $4.75 bridge fee, and a $5.00 temporary tag fee.

Thank you for your response. Your note about mandatory vehicle fees is well-taken. I was already aware of those and I included them in my 10% figure. However, in my original review I did not clearly indicate that the 10% figure includes mandatory fees, so I will modify my review to reflect that. As I said, I should have been a savvier buyer. I should have asked more questions and read more carefully. For instance, though I did not originally notice this, the road hazard warranty document, which I freely signed, does say, “The purchase of this Service Contract is optional and is not required to obtain financing.” However, I was never told that this was optional; it was simply grouped together with other taxes and fees and presented as if it were obligatory. Why not be transparent about this? I certainly don’t think you’re legally in the wrong. My complaint has to do with the (lack of clear) communication, which I take to be an important part of good customer service. You are obviously not obligated to remedy this, but I believe that it would be appropriate for you, as a gesture of customer service, to return $362 to me. Regarding my 10% figure: The car unit price was $23828. The total cost I was given, and paid in full, was 26194.62. The difference is 2366.62, or 9.9% of the car unit price, which I rounded to 10%. Most of this, as you rightly note, is required: state-mandated taxes and fees were 1604.75 for my vehicle, and I certainly don’t object to this. However, you also charge additional taxes and fees that are not required: dealer prep, dealer’s inventory tax, and documentary fee added up to 399.87 for me (and this is not including the road hazard warranty). Of course, I am aware that some of these—such as the documentary fee—are customary, and that you’re running a business to make money. I’m critical of them because they are much higher than I’ve paid elsewhere in purchasing a used vehicle from a dealer. It’s a case of feeling like I’m being nickeled and dimed, even if the extra charges are small in comparison to the car purchase. Hopefully this clarifies my feedback in a fair way. As I stated, my critical feedback is simply about how high the non-mandatory fees are, and about poor communication with these fees, especially the road hazard warranty.
