Need a Good Car Now Last two cars were Toyota Corollas purchased new. Drove the first for ten years and the second one for nearly twenty years. Car had been on its last leg for a while now and had some major problems but it wouldn't have been beneficial to sink any more money into it at that age. This purchase was going to have to be a used car and that was a daunting prospect. I not only needed a reliable car at a reasonable price but needed it to be a good investment that would last a long time. I asked my mechanic for a recommendation and he said either Toyota or Honda. I researched both the Corolla and Civic from 2008-2015 at the library online in Consumer Reports. I read online reviews and ratings of local dealerships on Angie's List and the BBB. What I read was frightening. Most dealerships had multiple stories of unethical behavior by the dealerships and customers who regret their selection of car and dealership. The only highly recommended dealer I found was Roush Pre-Certified in Westerville. I checked out their website and visited their lot when they were closed. I narrowed it down to two available Civics that were of interest. I printed off the Accu-Check reports for these two vehicles and looked at pricing on Kelly Blue Book website and Edmunds. When I arrived at the dealership I was met by Terry who asked about my specific needs and desired features and preferred colors. He determined I was looking for a basic 2014 Civic. He explained the Pre-Certified Program and its benefits. He used his inventory list and the website to narrow it down to three vehicles (one of which turned out to be no longer available). He printed off the vehicle history for me and answered questions I had about the history and recall concerns. He explained all that is done to prepare a vehicle to be sold as Pre-Certified which turned out to be just what I needed since I want to be free from doing repairs for awhile (just maintenance). When my questions were answered and my concerns were resolved I test drove one of the two cars (my preferred). When I returned the Sales Manager Ben sat with me in the car and gave me a tour of many of the features. While I was offered to test drive any other cars I decided that I liked the one I had driven. Terry sat with me and looked at the invoicing which was itemized and straight-forward, no hidden fees or surprises. We talked about financing options. I mentioned that I had seen a reference to special Edmunds Pricing when I followed the link from the Roush website to Edmunds. I didn't know how much discount that was because I had been wary of clicking that button and maybe locking in a price that might not have been as good as I would get in person. Terry wasn't familiar with that but consulted with Ben and then told me that he would honor that online pricing offer which gave me an additional discount. I told him my old car wasn't a viable trade-in but he insisted on checking it out and giving me a small amount for it so I wouldn't have the bother of trying to salvage it. I had already checked out the likely amount I could get from local salvagers. Many wouldn't take a car that old and the net amount would be reduced if I had to tow it to a salvager. I decided to accept that offer. Terry tried to do my insurance coverage update online for me but ran into problems with my Insurer's website so I had to take care of that the next morning by phone. I signed all the paperwork and I drove the new ("new to me") Civic home that day. I didn't have the original title for the trade-in with me that day so Terry had me write a check for the amount of the trade-in which he held and returned to me the next day when I brought in the title. The whole process was easy painless even though my situation had some complicating factors. The car feels like a new car to me and even though it is the basic Civic it has a lot of "upgrades" in comparison to my old car. I am hoping to drive it for a very long time. I have had several emails and phone messages from Terry following up to see if I have any questions or if I need anything else. I was very relieved to have the whole car situation settled since it was just a week before Christmas and I am sure my old car wouldn't have survived in winter weather. More
