UPDATE: I was contacted by Suburban who is listed as a General Manager on their website. He offered to have the vehicle protections re-applied as I doubted they were placed on the vehicle. After finding out they use Permaplate, I decided to check out what that was. I contacted a couple companies who detail cars and install paint protection, their responses were basically Turtle Wax at best, gimmick at worst. I declined to have the products re-applied as they are just junk products. I consider this aspect resolved but am still shocked and appalled they tried to charge $3,500 for this product. I was also reimbursed $155 for over charge of doc fees. They initially tried to say they were mandated to charge $230 but acknowledged that Michigan does not require dealers to charge a doc fee. They said they are required to charge every one the same fee. I was unable to confirm that with the state, but there are multiple solutions. They could simply not charge a fee. They could charge everyone $75. They could deduct it off the price of the vehicle. The fact is, Ford very clearly has a process for states that require all customers to be charged the same: "In states that permitted more than $75 and also required that all customers be charged the same amount, dealers may charge the Plan customer $75 (AZ-Plan) or $100 (X-Plan) and indicate any additional fees have been paid by Ford Motor Company as part of the AXZD-Plan Program dealer reimbursement on the buyer's order." I was reimbursed the excess fees so I consider this matter resolved. Suburban underwent an ownership change in the past year and it seems to be showing. The sales tactics in dealerships are top down. I have seen at least one other review where a customer was deceived into purchasing $3,000 in protection products. The salesman are not your friends and will lie to you. My salesman even called me Scott, my name is not Scott, in an email. That shows how little they care about you and that there whole small talk is to feel you out and find your weakness. They lied and said this was a customer order who walked. They knew I would object to a 10% increase in price. That's when they smell blood in the water and bring in the closer, aka sales manager, to finish you off. They offer this protection package at half price which is still way too much. The salesman is your friend who is fighting for you, at least that is what they want you to think. Most likely the salesman and manager were game planing how they were going to sell this junk to me while I was test driving the vehicle. They probably even had a laugh at my expense. Once you make it through the good cop bad cop routine, you will go to the real salesman aka the finance man. They will assure you you are in good hands. They won't tell you he is a salesman but the fact is new car sales are just not that big of a profit margin. The profit center and where the dealer's bread is buttered is in the finance room and Suburban is no different. They will try to sell you thousands of dollars of overpriced and unnecessary warranties and service plans. They will not take your first no so you just got to keep saying no. They are optional and you owe them no explanation. They will also try to funnel you into financing with the manufacturer or one of their lenders. They do this because they can finance all these overpriced and useless warranties into your car loan. Get pre-approved with your bank first. I did finance with Suburban's Capital One because the rate was the same and declined all their warranties. Suburban did get me on an optional e-filing fee for $24. They never verbally said it was optional. If you come out of the finance room only being scammed out of $24, you've done all right. I'm going to check with the state of Michigan to see if a e-filing fee is legal. Seems like a double dip of fees. Bottom line, I got the car I wanted at a fair price despite Suburban's lies and attempts to rip me off. The price wasn't great but it wasn't bad. It was straight Z plan price and in hindsight I should have went elsewhere since I could have gotten that price at any Ford dealer. I have purchased three brand new cars in eight years from Suburban and this will be the last. Repeat customers mean nothing to them if they cannot sell you add ons and warranties.
