Since 1952, J.H. Barkau & Sons has served the Northern Illinois, Southern Wisconsin stateline area for their automotive needs. We can proudly boast to over 70,000 customers in those years and have had thousands of customers purchase multiple vehicles and generations of families that have allowed us to serve them.
When John H. Barkau founded the business, his goal was to bring quality, affordable transportation to the local area. Jim (2nd generation), Rick (3rd generation), and Willie (3rd generation) Barkau have continued in that tradition while expanding our marketplace to be worldwide. We have had vehicles shipped to Russia, Sweden, Australia, Turkey, Mexico and many other locations. We have vehicles purchased by customers in 49 states and commonly have customers fly in to pick up their new vehicles. In all of this, it has been a pleasure for the Barkau family to help fulfill the transportation needs of a varied clientele.
J.H. Barkau & Sons has accomplished this feat by continuing to offer quality, hand-picked vehicles at very competitive prices. We believe in offering our customers an incredible selection that is second to none, with over 1100 vehicles available for purchase. We believe in a no pressure sales environment and in quality reconditioning of our inventory selection. Our sales teams at our Cedarville and Freeport stores each have over a century of experience in helping fill the needs of our vast customer base. The funny part is, we remember a lot of you years later and we are genuinely happy to see you.
But selling cars is not all that we do. We believe in supporting the local community through donations, Toy Drives, Food Drives and many other local charities and fundraisers. We also run the “Excellerate” program for Aquin Catholic Schools and have facilitated over 113 donated vehicles. These guys really make you feel at home and there is no pressure at all. Erick Santiago was my salesman who was very laid back answering all my questions with honesty which I really appreciated. The owner Jim Barkau even popped in and sat down to visit and offered to buy me lunch. You can really tell this is a family owned environment of people who really care about the customer. Being the dog lover that I am, the best part was when Chumly the dog roamed into the office to say hi. The finance guy Cullin Curry was also awesome. From a female perspective--all-in-all one of THE BEST experiences I've every had at a dealership. Job well done fellas. I will be back!! More

Exactly what I wanted I had been looking for a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with the inline 6 cylinder 4.0 liter motor and a manual transmission for some time. I was about to b I had been looking for a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with the inline 6 cylinder 4.0 liter motor and a manual transmission for some time. I was about to buy a different one when I found the listing at J H Barkau & Sons Cedarville. I drove a little over an hour to meet them when they opened at 8:00 a.m. the next day and took the Jeep for a spin. It ran great despite the higher miles than I was initially looking for. The price on the window sticker was $100 less than I saw in the ad and they honored it, no questions asked. They even found me financing that was under 4% when my home CU was offering 9+% because of the age of the vehicle. We shook hands and they held the Jeep for me until I could make it down that weekend. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. More

Cedarville's Dealer is the Real Deal We were looking for a specific year/model of Jeep Wrangler. There was one in our medium sized Indiana town, and even though the dealer is one of the l We were looking for a specific year/model of Jeep Wrangler. There was one in our medium sized Indiana town, and even though the dealer is one of the largest in this region they care more about quantity rather than customer relation. True to form their salesperson didn't even acknowledge anyone else in the family, but me. We expanded our search and found a few other Jeeps and this one at JH Barkau and Sons in Cedarville really was the cream of the crop, but it was four hours away. I emailed with Tim and he texted me a personalized video of the Jeep. After that, we were on our way. When we got there Tim and the rest of the crew were low pressure, gave me a decent trade in (good bye old Wrangler, thank you for the 10 years), and even worked a bit after closing to complete the process. While they clearly sell a lot of cars, they also know that managing the customer is what really sells the car. It was a four hour drive to look at the Jeep, but Tim and the rest of the team made a human connection and the sale. They also love animals and that's a good start to knowing they are decent people. If they have your vehicle, four hours is a good drive to work with good people. Thanks Tim! More

Tim Border and Chad Piefer made things so easy and treated me as if I mattered. I drove 2 hours and forty minutes to get to their dealership and was not disappointed at all.
