I had one of the most terrible experiences working with Karl Vonder Schmalz. As a young female and first-time car buyer, I was met with disrespect and misogyny. When I first came in and started to question Karl Vonder Schmalz. As a young female and first-time car buyer, I was met with disrespect and misogyny. When I first came in and started to question the vehicle's mechanical record I was questioned in a way that made me felt belittled. I then stepped away from the car because I didn't feel as though it was in good shape. Karl reached out again and said he would 'allow' me to take it to a mechanic. I did just that, spent $200 of my own money, and returned to the dealership with some concerns about the brakes and tires. When I asked if he could lower the price due to the looming $2K cost to get these things fixed, he stared at me and coldly and would not budge. Everyone is trying to get the best deal and I have no problem negotiating but how he handled the conversation is what bothered me. He made me feel inadequate and unjustified in my questioning. I walked away from the car. I expressed this experience to the general manager John who was horrified and made sure I felt welcomed and respected. I ended up buying the car (with no reduction in ticket price) from John, but left the dealership with a poor taste in my mouth. If you're looking to buy from Devon Audi, I would not suggest working with Karl - especially if you are a young female. More
