I went to the dealer to fix a tailgate issue and was given an estimate of $500 to diagnose and then fix it if possible. I told Mr. Simpers I didn't want anything else done; no oil changes, adjustments, given an estimate of $500 to diagnose and then fix it if possible. I told Mr. Simpers I didn't want anything else done; no oil changes, adjustments, inspections, etc., just fix that one problem. I asked what if you find the problem quickly and it is s a simple fix? He said not to worry the $500 would not apply if the repair was less. The description of the labor change on my bill, which magically came to $499.99, stated the problem, a diagnostic check was done that showed an electrical error, and the technician found a broken wire that was easily accessed and quickly repaired. By any measure, generously granting one hour of diagnosis and one-half hour to solder and put a sleeve is reasonable, or two hours max. There is no way this should cost $500! More
