I have been buying cars and having them serviced at Family Kia for 6 years. Their service department is efficient and thorough. This week we traded in our Kia Soul for a Kia Seltos. I've been a Kia customer for a long time, this is my 4th or 5th vehicle that I purchased from them. This is a newer vehicle, I got it about a year ago and had taken it in for a 15k mile oil change. The g or 5th vehicle that I purchased from them. This is a newer vehicle, I got it about a year ago and had taken it in for a 15k mile oil change. The guy at the counter told me it that it was 'recommended' and seemed to imply to me very heavily that I ought to have fuel additives added in. He rattled off the numbers to me incredibly fast and told me it would be about $350 and that this work wasn't included with the maintenance contract that I had signed up for. I want to keep my car in good shape but I was disappointed to see that I was going to be walking out the door with so much money out but at the time I just dismissed it and thought, "it is what it is" When I came back to pay the bill, he seemed far more interested in me paying first than reviewing the charges, which I did. When I finally had an oppertunity, I reviewed the work that was done and discovered a couple of things 1) The fuel additives he 'recommended' to me didn't need to be done until the 30k mile mark, not the 15k mile mark, so this feels like upselling stuff to me. 2) While I was there he had told me he recommended a tire rotation/rebalancing, but then told me I had had that done at 10k so I didn't need to have this done at this time. Imagine my suprise then when $150 of the charges was for...a tire rotation and rebalancing, which I had been told I wouldn't need but apparently was done anyway. It's quite possible that he just veyr poorly communicated to me what I needed to do versus what might be good extra work for the car, but part of the reason that I perferred to take my vehicle to Kia over one fo those 5-minute oil change places is because I always felt like Kia was very honest and upfront with me about what they were charging me and why and what I actually needed, versus the other places that felt like they were more interested in pushing stuff on to me that I didn't need. I should have done a better job advocating for myself, but I trusted Kia anbd deferred to their judgement and now, after looking over everything that was done, I feel like that trust was exploited and I was charged a bunch of items I didn't actually need. I still have a maintenance contract until the 36k mile mark (though I'm not entirely sure the value of said warranty when I'm still walking away with $350 of extra crap I don't need right now) so I intend to continue to bring it in for oil changes since that's covered in the maintenance agreement but from here on in if it's not in the maintenance agreement, unless my car is physcially not able to drive off the lot, I would prefer to take my business somewhere else.
