Amazing Diagnostic Ear! I have a 2013 Mazda 3 which started making this very weird, very annoying noise. The best way to describe it, is that it sounded like a tuning fork. I have a 2013 Mazda 3 which started making this very weird, very annoying noise. The best way to describe it, is that it sounded like a tuning fork. After driving for approximately 15 minutes the tone would begin and remain for the duration of my trip. To try and pinpoint the noise, I had my daughter hang out the right and the left rear windows, with ipad in hand, while I drove circles in a parking lot. We were able to record the tone primarily coming from the rear, right side of the car. Since the tone was so bizarre I decided to take the ipad with me to the dealership, Heritage Mazda, and let a service person listen to it. My service manager, Philip, listened to the tone, ask me multiple questions about my trips and what would trigger the noise and came up with the diagnosis of a problem with the rear brakes. I agreed that it sounded plausible and we went ahead with the repair. Problem solved! Philip was amazing in the time he took to really listen to me and to listen to my recording and ask many insightful questions. Philip showed me my existing brake pads in comparison to new brake pad so I could see that they did indeed need to be replaced. Philip was a pleasure to work with and I will return to him when I need additional work. More
