Great Experience Ron was very helpful with assisting me in selecting a vehicle in my price range. I believe I got a fair price and am very happy with my purchase. Truthful review, but not stellar. (Yes, there is some good) What follows is an honest review of South Oak Jeep, regarding my recent purchase of a 2016 Certified – Pre-owned Jeep Cherokee from them in February. What follows is an honest review of South Oak Jeep, regarding my recent purchase of a 2016 Certified – Pre-owned Jeep Cherokee from them in February. This is NOT a stellar review. This is a truthful review. I contacted Ron Alassaf at South Oak when I discovered my Jeep online on AutoTrader.com. The price and low mileage and the certification instantly made me want to find out more. Ron was a pleasure to work with. My family is originally from Illinois and South Oak was close enough to where we currently live to make the drive up easily. Ron helped us by staying in contact as we drove up from Kentucky to purchase the vehicle on February 10th incase the vehicle happened to sell on our way up. When we arrived he had the Jeep washed and waiting, all-warmed up (There was a ton of snow everwhere) for my Dad and I to look at. The Jeep looked great, even in the evening when we arrived. It still looks fantastic now, I’m happy to have it. My Dad and I did wish that the tires were a little newer, as I’m going to have to be replacing them eventually. (Ron explained when we asked, that the practice of the dealer is to not replace things if they are 50% or over in life left.) (Okay, I don’t like that, but I can understand it, they’re trying to make money and run a business.) We financed with our own CU, but in order to do so we had to finance with the Dealer, before we could drive off of the lot. We had hoped to put a down payment on the car and drive up the next weekend with our check from our CU, but the dealer said we either had to buy it then and drive it home or they couldn’t keep the car. Thus we had to finance with their bank and then pay it off when we got home that week with our own CU. (That part worked out fine, our CU is great to deal with) So we got the paperwork filled out, paid a down payment, and drove off the lot with my new Jeep. This is where I share facts and the problems I had with South Oak: Little problems with customer service/policies: South Oak does not fill up the tank on a used car; it’s not their policy. (I know they’re trying to make a business run, but that policy should really be changed, especially when we ended up paying what we did with the fees and such. Paying nearly $18k for a vehicle with a couple gallons of gas in it, just doesn’t seem right. I’d encourage the folks at DennyGuest to reconsider their practices on that.) So I pulled in the gas station next to the dealer to fill up my Jeep, and immediately noticed a chip in the windshield, which looks like someone filled it with superglue? (No big deal, it’s a used car, but it would have been nice to know in advance) As I travel home, I found out that the Sirius trial would not work, because the Sirius radio hadn’t been reset yet. (Someone could have come out while we were purchasing the car and reset it, no problem, but they didn’t.) Along those same lines, I discovered that the AM/FM radio did not work. My Dad spoke with Ron on the phone about it after I discovered that the antenna had been snapped off with the bolt still stuck in it in the roof. There was a new antenna in the trunk of the car, but I ended up having to go to my local Jeep dealer and pay them a $100 deductible on an approx. $1000 bumper to bumper warranty I had to buy since it was certified to have them fix an antenna that SHOULD have been fixed before the car was sold. That’s just bad customer service on a CERTIFIED vehicle… While my car was there ( I did this within the first week of having my car) they told me that the Alignment on my Car was also off by a substantial amount and that I would have to pay another $90 to get it fixed. (Why, wasn’t the alignment corrected on the Jeep checked before I bought it? No idea.) (Yes, I know running over big things etc. can move the alignment, but I didn’t run over anything, nor did I hit any potholes.) This is just part of the stress I experienced. When I took my Jeep home and the next day started moving things from my old Volvo to it, I was SHOCKED to discover that the Jeep had not been sufficiently cleaned. There were pistachio shells stuck underneath the driver and passenger seats, stuck in the rear air-vents, and there were those as well as fries, 3 open ketchup packets, and dog hair everywhere under the rear seats and the rear compartment when I folded the seats down. That’s DISGUSTING and should have been cleaned if the vehicle had been properly detailed. 2 weeks after purchasing my vehicle, I took off school, missing class to drive 3 hours home to register my car, only to find out that the Title was never sent. I called that next morning and spoke with Ray, the New Car Sales Manager who was a pleasure to work with. He told me he would have their title clerk contact me Monday morning and see what happened to it. I understand folks can be busy, but Jill never contacted me until I called her later that Monday. (Note: Jill was a blessing to work with, but I’m being truthful here) Jill didn’t know where my title was, because she hadn’t processed any of the paperwork yet. 2 WEEKS later, none of my paperwork had been processed. Thus began the NIGHTMARE of purchasing my Jeep from South Oak. Because we had financed with our own CU, and paid off the Chase Loan, Jill needed proof of us using our new CU and of paying the vehicle off. I was never told that until one of my every few day phone calls almost 3 weeks later to speak with her. Instead, I was told that she would send process my paperwork. NB: Kentucky is a title-holding state. Even though I financed with my own CU, my County Clerk should have received the title within 2 weeks so that I could register my car, and they would have been able to release the loan from Chase and handle everything for me. I called and left a message with a manager’s voicemail, which was also never returned, about my title problem. (Maybe it was lost, who knows?) I went for over a month and a half before my title was FINALLY sent to my Clerks office and I could register my car last week, while home for Easter. I’m extremely thankful for Jill who was very kind to work with over the phone and even sent me a 2nd drive-away so that I could still drive my vehicle until the Title work was finally sent. Jill, you’re a gem! Thank you! I’m a Catholic Seminarian studying to be a priest. I understand people mess up, I understand things don’t always go according to plan and I NEVER leave bad reviews for businesses, even if I had the worst service, I still try to tip and be a blessing to others. But my nightmare of purchasing a certified jeep that had a broken antenna, and wasn’t able to be registered for over a month and a half has made South Oak Jeep a dealer that I (or my family/friends in the Chicago area) will never do business with again. I love my Jeep. I’m grateful for it. I’m grateful for Ron, for Ray, and for Jill who finally got my title sent to me so that I could register my car. But truthfully, it was not a pleasant experience overall and I will not be back. I hope that you all are able to fix what I see as major problems with your customer service and care, so that you can make sure that no one has the same experience I did. Because it was not pleasant at all. Maybe I was just a random bad case in a bunch of other good ones, but when you spend as much as I did on a car, you deserve better service, that’s just human decency. Happy Easter! God bless you all!
