I purchased a used vehicle from Handy Downtown / Handy Toyota of St Albans, VT on 4/21/25 as an out of state resident. The vehicle was portrayed to be a safe vehicle by what appeared to be a valid VT stat Toyota of St Albans, VT on 4/21/25 as an out of state resident. The vehicle was portrayed to be a safe vehicle by what appeared to be a valid VT state inspection sticker placed on the bottom left corner of the windshield with an expiration of 12/25. Yesterday on 4/28/25 I brought the vehicle to a Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection station where it failed for a non functioning parking brake and a broken tail light lens. Driving with this rejection is a traffic violation and subject to fines and penalties. This should not be a concern when buying a vehicle from a reputable dealer, and it's not acceptable when the vehicle is represented to be up to safety standards. I have tried contacting the dealer via email and my phone call has been directed to a voice mail box with no response since. The 30 day / 1000 mile limited powertrain warranty and "Handy Care" service that comes with the vehicle sale offering reduced service costs are useless if contact with the dealership is not reciprocal. No where on the sales agreement is it listed to be an "as-is sale." I don't understand how a vehicle can be sold by a dealer that will not pass a basic safety inspection if it has a current state inspection sticker already and was claimed to have gone through a pre-purchase inspection via the CarFax. How do these safety related faults slip through on their end? Based on the lack of communication from the dealer I feel that the inspection sticker that was placed on the vehicle may have been the result of a falsified inspection and was wrongly portrayed as a safe vehicle. If the dealer did this with my vehicle, I question how many other vehicles the dealer has sold that are possibly unsafe while having what appears to be a current valid inspection sticker. Watch out and make sure you get your next vehicle inspected by a third party before committing to a sale where they won't take care of you afterwards. Working with Chris was wonderful and the dealership offered a generous trade in value, but the product and after sale support is severely lacking. UPDATE/EDIT 5/1/25 General Manager Adam L. reached out to me yesterday, I was unavailable. Today we were able to make contact. Adam expressed to me the great pride he has in regards to his family dealership's reputation and wanted to help make things right. He was able to acknowledge the communication failures (which he genuinely seemed unhappy about) as part of a respectful discussion and even offered to split the cost of the emergency brake repairs at a shop close to me. He also was touching base on the other portions of my complaint to a satisfactory standing. I hope the offer is followed through and the dealership can maintain the reputation he wants it to hold. I will update this review on that result. Based off our conversation Adam seems great to work with and an excellent employer to work for. More

Must improve scheduling and wait time communication. Also, can not return vehicles covered in dirt in the inside because the technician is unable to keep things clean or clean up after themselves.
