These people are defrauding their customers by pointing out problems and then offering solutions that don't solve those problems. In my case, they failed my car's state inspection, saying that I needed out problems and then offering solutions that don't solve those problems. In my case, they failed my car's state inspection, saying that I needed a power steering pump replacement, which would have cost me $1000 for the part + installation. So, I paid for the part (special order), which then would have shipped and been installed a few days later. However, a few different people told me I was getting ripped off. I then took my car to a mechanic, who likewise told me I was getting ripped off. This mechanic was able to fix the entire problem with some bushings and washers, in a sense saving me $900 in the process. I say "in a sense," because that $1000 actually would have gone to waste entirely. That's because this mechanic also pointed out that the things he replaced would not have come with the parts that Southern Team Nissan ordered. In other words, my car would have had a brand new power steering pump that still leaked, I would have been out $1000, and my car still would not have passed inspection. Also, the part itself was only about $300, and there was going to be a labor fee that bumped it up to about $400, which leaves about $600 mysteriously unaccounted for. Luckily, I canceled the order before having to pay the full amount. Now, Southern Team Nissan refunded the part, but they still charged a restocking fee of 20%, saying it was all my fault for letting it happen. Scummy Act #1: Being an authorized dealer of my car. Any advice, recommendations, or repairs they suggest are all going to be treated as legitimate and necessary. But then they turn around and use that reputable name to trick people. Scummy Act #2: Blaming the customer. They made the recommendations. They're the authorized dealer who should know what's wrong. If I take them at their word and authorize a payment because of it, then I should be allowed to back out of that payment at zero cost, because the payment was made under false pretenses. If a thief gets caught stealing off the shelf, they don't get to charge a 20% restocking fee to put it back on the shelf. Scummy Act #3: Wait time. State inspections don't take 2 hours. Finding the cause of a leak may take some time, but they weren't actually looking for that -- otherwise they would have found the real problem. Yet people still have to wait for a long time. This is a sales tactic: the sunk cost fallacy. "I've already been waiting this long, I may as well just do whatever they want so that I don't have to waste any more time." Scummy Act #4: Threat of legal repercussions. "So, how do you plan on getting your car to pass inspection?" Well, I guess if I want to be able to drive my car legally, I HAVE to do the only one suggestion you've given me. In other words, you've left me with two choices: 1) I have to give you $1000, or 2) I break the law. I'm not going to break the law, so I guess I have to give you $1000. Now, my friends were sharing their experience with this exact dealership. And all the stories were the exact same. They went in and got told that they needed thousands of dollars in repairs. They didn't. Someone's daughter went in and got told she needed thousands of dollars in repairs. She didn't. Someone's cousin went in and got told he needed thousands of dollars in repairs. He didn't. Southern Team Nissan is wearing a reputable name, but then they're using that name to scam people. More
