I always trusted Smythe service but I’ve lost all confidence after this visit. I brought in my car because it had spit out a limp mode message (Reduced Engine Performance) twice. The car stalled on confidence after this visit. I brought in my car because it had spit out a limp mode message (Reduced Engine Performance) twice. The car stalled once. Other than that it ran fine but I wanted to get it checked. Mark was very polite and professional. But he explained that the code the car threw (P023400) meant the turbo system needed to be replaced. Now, that certainly could be one cause. However when I asked about all the common issues that could also cause this code (waste-gate, actuator, dirty throttle body, boost/MAP sensors, solenoid), that was all waved off as “It’s the turbo; that's why you have no acceleration.” I explained, as I had when I dropped the car off that I was no experiencing any acceleration issues. I was driving on highways and local, and acceleration and RPMs seemed normal. Smythe was adamant it was the turbo a d quoted me over $5,000 including tax! Mark was sympathetic and very polite and understanding but stated the turbo had “a nasty leak.” I paid about $245 diagnostic fee and took my car. I went to my local mechanic and explained I brought the car to a dealer as I thought their diagnostics could pinpoint the cause. He checked the car and repaired it. There was a vacuum hose with a tear that was flapping open, and the actuator arm was cleaned, and cost less than Smythe’s wrong diagnosis. The mechanic’s analogy was “replacing the turbo as the first repair is like going to the doctor for a broken finger and he wants to amputate your arm.” More

The problem was resolved but reappeared right away. An unusual miss for the Smythe folks. This is the fifth Volvo I’ve owned and they’ve all been serviced by Smythe. An unusual miss for the Smythe folks. This is the fifth Volvo I’ve owned and they’ve all been serviced by Smythe. More
