Every part of purchasing our vehicle was a nice experience. We compared vehicles in stock and prices at different dealerships and these were the easiest and nicest people to work with. Please improve: we were not left with enough charge on the car's battery to get us all the way home. The gauge read 12 miles more than the distance we needed, but the gap closed on the way home and we rolled into a charge station with 0% left. That put us in a bind at 9:30 pm trying to figure out apps that needed downloading, the ins and outs of different types of chargers, and use of the chargers with the correct adapters. We were worried that we would have to use the roadside assistance an hour after buying the car. That said, we would still go back to this dealership to buy a car. I would just make sure that we leave with plenty of preparation for the trip home.

I purchased a 2021 4Runner Feb 27th from Toyota of Berkeley. I’m generally review-averse and rarely express my concern to the masses, but it feels warranted here. *Bait and switch pricing occurred after window sticker sent, pricing online reflected, and verbal communication made with sales department* The vehicle was listed at $48,290. Hours into communication and the start of my drive from Sacramento, I get a phone call saying the price went up $49,990. After 20 min on the side of the road, they dropped it down to $48,845. I continued the commute down and made the choice to spend the extra money because I loved the 4Runner. This went against my better judgement. In person, they were appropriate, supportive and accommodating. The put a show on for my 2 young children to watch and even brought out some snacks for them. Over the phone, I couldn’t believe the way some of the conversations went. I was told to feel grateful that they brought it down to only $555 more than what was initially $1,700 surprise increase. Later on a follow up call, the point was reiterated that they could have raised it $5k more if they wanted and that “there was nothing I could do about it”. These conversations were with managers of the dealership. And they’re right, they can. But statements like “well sir, maybe it’s just more car than you can afford” after I express my frustration with the surprise price bomb appear tone deaf when they fail to see that it had nothing to do with the price, and everything to do with their integrity. If the price was as advertised, I still would have considered the purchase. The price never changed online nor as advertised in person, only internally. The Pros: -The car is great overall. Some damage to the rear cargo and passenger side were disclosed when asked over the phone, but I’m very happy with the vehicle. -Melissa in the finance department was receptive, supportive and helpful with the process. -Keith went out of his way to help me with the vehicle. -Financing was fairly seamless. -A 2 year/25k mile maintenance plan was included. The Cons: -Even at the time of purchase, the online price reflected less than what I ended up paying. And I’m not talking about about taxes/fees/reg. -Unnecessarily insulting motivated customers over the phone -Vehicle did not include all advertised features. ($500 Yakima mega rack, something I will now have to purchase on my own) -I won’t shame the employees I took issue with. Maybe they were just the bearer of bad news. But their delivery sucked big time and so did their attitude. Financially, I’m out $1,050 with the surprise price increase and failing to include the rack or at least discount accordingly at time of purchase. The poor display of ethics is more concerning to me personally. I was informed multiple times “we’re sorry but this never happens” regarding the price increase:”. Let’s hope they hold true to their word this time and take a hard look at their customer service abilities.

I’ll start with the TLDR update (since it’s an exhausting review), though feel free to read-on w/ the detailed update below if you wish to feel my pain: TLDR: Advisor I’ve never worked with prior (following dropping off my daughter’s vehicle for a check engine light) asked my daughter to sign off on a nearly $5k maintenance to “tear down the engine to investigate the head gasket.” We of course were suspicious (this is a Toyota & why we purchased Toyota’s for reliability), calling 3 other Toyota specialty shops (ALL who said ALREADY? & that this was very rare/unusual), with one of the shops (following comprehensive diagnosis) stating, "I can tell you with 100% certainty, your gasket is not the issue… Issues with misfires were isolated to loosely secured & oxidized 3rd party plugs & nothing more… Upon replacement/clearing lights, the vehicle has been running flawlessly for over a month… Detailed Update: My daughter's Corolla displayed a check engine light less than two weeks after scheduled maintenance at Dublin Toyota, where the vehicle had been previously signed off as "Perfect/No Issues." I performed initial diagnostics w/ my OBD2, which isolated misfires (primarily w/ cylinder 3) suggested checking/replacing spark plugs/coils. I scheduled service w/ Dublin Toyota for further diagnosis, with the vehicle managed by an advisor we’ve never dealt with before (I won’t name him outright, since it doesn’t matter anyway / “one bad apple”). Within a day or so, the advisor called my daughter directly to approve a $4,800 quote for a head gasket replacement. The advisor stated the cost could exceed $4,800 following engine tear-down (depending on what else they may find), sending links for financing options and following up daily with texts. They later trimmed $300 from the quote. These daily calls/texts felt like pressured sales tactics which raised a massive red flag. Despite being told by the advisor that the car was not safe/should not be driven, I retrieved the vehicle ($250 out of pocket for the "diagnosis") while the advisor was on vacation. The Dublin Toyota Report only mentioned a simple combustion leak test citing excessive hydrocarbons, recommending a complete teardown of the engine to review the gasket. I had contacted (3) other mechanics (all of whom specialized w/ Toyota & stated the same thing after relaying the Make/Model/Years/Mileage, etc…, i.e.: “ALREADY?” The independent mechanic we chose (master mechanic referred/trusted to by a close family friend) ran more comprehensive tests, including a seven-minute combustion leak test (revving to around 2500 RPMs) where the color never changed (remaining bright blue). Their high level report (though more tests were performed) provided the following feedback: * Block test determined no evidence of excessive hydrocarbons * Engine Oil = CLEAN * They stated that our coolant was completely full & typically drains quickly with head gasket leaks. * Spark plugs, however, revealed that one of the plugs was so loose they barely needed a tool to remove. They took side-by-side pictures of the plugs, with Plug 3 being discolored, and so loose that the engine was not fully sealed, stating that this would absolutely result in a misfire. * They also ran a borescope into Plug 3’s bay (providing me with the video) and stated, "I can tell you with 100% certainty that it is not the gasket," stating again that the loose and corroded plug is the likely root cause (then swapped our plugs with Toyota OEM 90919-01275). * As an extra test, they even swapped the Cylinder 3 and Cylinder 4 coils as well (with the new plugs) and cleared the codes. It's been about a month since this service, and the car has been running flawlessly following the spark plug replacement, with check engine lights not returning. I am disappointed, and as a result, I will be finding another (now inconvenient vs local) location to service my vehicles. Shame…

I recently attempted to purchase a Lexus SC 430 from this dealership and obtained a Lexus pre-purchase inspection prior to finalizing the deal. The inspection revealed significant front-end and steering issues, including a steering gear problem, worn ball joints, damaged linkage and boots, and power-steering leaks. The technician also noted front-end noise, which directly correlated with these findings. The dealership was fully aware in advance that I was planning to fly from Texas to pick up the vehicle and drive it back, so I took extra care to ensure the car was mechanically sound before traveling. Despite being presented with a documented Lexus inspection identifying safety-related steering and suspension concerns, the dealership refused to address any of the issues. I even offered a reasonable compromise—allowing the dealership to perform the repairs themselves and split the cost—but they declined to engage in any solution or price adjustment. I understand that used vehicles are sold “as-is,” but refusing to acknowledge or discuss documented steering and suspension defects, especially when a buyer is traveling long distance and negotiating in good faith, is disappointing and concerning. I ultimately chose not to proceed with the purchase. I strongly recommend that prospective buyers obtain an independent inspection and be prepared for the dealership to decline addressing serious mechanical issues, even when clearly documented.
